The Filipino Community in Liverpool and Districts came together to celebrate their 15th Santa Cruzan at All Saints Liverpool Catholic Chuch on 30th May 2010. The parade down the aisle of the church of the Ave Maria Angels and the bevy of Queens, demonstrated the variety of the beauty and dress of the Filipina. No particular Filipina stood out for they all looked so ‘magaanda’ that is beautiful it was as if a shining light was beaming into the church.

The Mass was celebrated  by Father Chris Higgins, with the assistance of Father Anthony Bernard and Father Nards Mercene, thre Filipino Priest. After the Mass there was a Procession for the Novena of the Virgin Mary around the grounds, ending up in the Parish Hall to continue with the Celebrations.

Fil-Oz was proudly supported by the Visayan Association of Austalia Inc. and the Praise Family Apostalate, and the newly formed Alliance of Philippine Organisations (APCO) and their affiliates. Our special guests for the occasion was the Mayor of Liverpool, Ms Wendy Waller, the Federal MP for Werriwa, Mr Chris Hayes and his wife Bernadette; also the Local MP for Liverpool, Mr Paul Lynch, and for the first time to give her organizations support was Dr Cen Amores of APCO.

As always the entertainment is what gives us enjoyment during the night. The group that provided the guests with non-stop entertainment was the ‘Cumancheros’ whose music and song was a pleasure to listen to. The two speakers, the Mayor of Liverpool and the Federal MP for Werriwa enlightened us on how much the Filipino’s have contributed to Liverpool and the nation on a whole.

The added bonus of entertainers was, Sidney and Jay, the singing duo from “One Good Night” plus our very own “That’s Entertainment” Ms Terry Spencer. Also putting on a brave performance was Ms Alisha Buaya with her guitar and song. Last of all the donated prizes for the Raffles was more than we expected, with lots of tickets sold.

The event was a big success this year for in 2009 we had about 300 in attendance, this year we exceeded our expectations with a huge turnout of about 500 plus. For me as Vice-President I think we all should be proud of the contributions made that helped this event to be a success.

The annual Fiesta of St. Joseph, held in honour of the husband of Mary, was celebrated with a Mass led by Father Raning Creta, which was held in the grounds of the St. Michaels’ Parish School, Reservoir Road, Blacktown on 14th March, 2009. The event was indeed well attended by Local Dignitaries and Consulate Officials. I would say more than 2000 plus people attended and were coming continuously as the day continued. With many Sponsored Stalls having a surprised boost in business, and the many Filipino Organisations having their stalls swamped with people wanting to taste the many delicacies that were on offer, too many even for me to choose from. Some 27 groups helped to make the day a success, despite the warm weather and threat of rain. The Visayan Association of Australia had a good roll-up of members to help on the day, of which we are proud to be a part of. To see so many also turn out in Filipinia attire also reminded me of the Fiesta’s that I have attended back home in my asawa’s province of Leyte. The entertainment provided in dance and song later in the day kept everyone happy and the atmosphere was full of friendship and a closer sense of community.

On January 17, 2010, the “Sinulog” Feast of the infant Jesus was celebrated at the Good Shepherd Catholic Church at Plumpton. About 12 members of the Visayan Cultural Dance Group and their many supporters helped to celebrate the event by dancing the “Pit Senyor” in honour of the infant Jesus. A mass is held in the church followed by the traditional Parade and Procession that leads to the Sinulog dancing on the oval area and other activities held in the hall, which included musicians and singing. The feast was also served in the hall. This year attracted a large amount of devotees from afar, a figure put at 3,000 by Mr Mitchell Badelles in his blog article “Magellan induced a current affair” and also commented that ‘devotees literally packed the church to the walls and overflowed into the courtyard.’ See his article at the belowmentioned website address - http://thefilipinoaustralian.com/blogs/magellan-induced-a-current-affair. With four (4) groups performing various dances to celebrate the event it showed as of previous years, I believe it is in its 20th year, it was again a successful event.
